Mumbai to Ratnagiri

NH66 ~340 km total

The main coastal highway connecting Mumbai to Ratnagiri. Straightforward until Panvel, then two demanding ghat sections — Khopoli and Kasad — add significant time depending on trucks and construction. The road improves noticeably past Chiplun.

Section breakdown

1

Mumbai to Panvel

~45 km Good

Urban exit via the Sion-Panvel Highway. Wide road but congestion builds near Kharghar and before the toll naka. Expect heavy traffic on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings.

Kalamboli junction and the Panvel toll naka back up badly on peak weekends. Budget an extra 30–45 minutes during holiday season.

2

Panvel to Khopoli

~30 km Good

Flat valley stretch before the ghats begin. Road is good and quick to cover. This is your last easy section before the climbs start.

3

Khopoli to Mangaon

~55 km Fair

The first major ghat section on NH66. Steep climbs, sharp curves, and heavy vehicles that slow to a crawl make this section time-consuming. Ongoing four-laning work has improved parts of it but adds diversions elsewhere.

Trucks dominate the left lane and frequently hold up traffic. Overtaking spots are limited. Diversions from widening work can add unpredictable delays.

4

Mangaon to Chiplun

~95 km Fair

Covers the Poladpur valley and the Kasad ghat — the single most time-consuming stretch on this route. The Kasad ghat is narrow, prone to fog in monsoon, and has seen very little widening compared to the Khopoli section.

The Kasad ghat is where most drives lose the most time. Fog during monsoon, slow trucks year-round, and a narrow two-lane section that has no real overtaking opportunity for long stretches.

5

Chiplun to Ratnagiri

~90 km Good

The road noticeably improves past Chiplun. There are smaller ghat patches but nothing as demanding as Kasad. Sangameshwar is a common halt for fuel and food.

Sangameshwar town can slow things briefly. Otherwise this section moves well.
