Mumbai to Goa
The classic Konkan road trip, mostly on NH66 through the coastal Western Ghats. The first half mirrors the Mumbai–Ratnagiri drive with its two tough ghat sections. South of Ratnagiri the road eases through coastal Maharashtra before crossing into Goa at Patradevi.
Section breakdown
Mumbai to Panvel
Urban exit via the Sion-Panvel Highway. Wide road but congestion builds near Kharghar and before the toll naka. Expect heavy traffic on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings.
Kalamboli junction and the Panvel toll naka back up badly on peak weekends. Budget an extra 30–45 minutes during holiday season.
Panvel to Khopoli
Flat valley stretch before the ghats begin. Road is good and quick to cover. Last easy section before the climbs.
Khopoli to Mangaon
First major ghat on NH66. Steep climbs and heavy trucks make this slow. Four-laning work has improved some sections but added diversions in others.
Trucks dominate and overtaking is limited. Widening diversions can add unpredictable time.
Mangaon to Chiplun
Poladpur valley and the Kasad ghat — the most time-consuming stretch on the full Mumbai–Goa drive. Narrow road, no overtaking on long sections, fog in monsoon.
Kasad ghat is where most drives lose the most time. Plan conservatively through this section.
Chiplun to Ratnagiri
Road improves past Chiplun. Smaller ghat patches but nothing like Kasad. Sangameshwar is a natural halt.
Sangameshwar town slows things briefly.
Ratnagiri to Kankavli
Coastal stretch through southern Konkan. Road quality is inconsistent — good sections alternate with rough patches. Scenery improves noticeably.
Rajapur bridge area can slow down due to ongoing bridge construction. Check status before travel.
Kankavli to Sawantwadi
Straightforward stretch. Sawantwadi is the last major Maharashtra town before the Goa border and a good place to fuel up and eat.
Sawantwadi to Panaji
Crosses into Goa at Patradevi. Road quality improves once inside Goa. A shorter ghat section exists if taking the highway through Mollem but most traffic stays on NH66.
Patradevi border crossing gets congested on long weekends and major holidays. Can add 30+ minutes during peak season.
